Travel Diary: My 10 Travel Bucket List Destinations

As a millennial myself, I know I’m guilty of spending hours on Pinterest or Instagram scrolling through travel photos or reading about people’s life-changing experiences.  Although I know I should be using my time more productively, I feel as though other millennials like me have the same passion to see the world and spend this time looking at these accounts of some kind of motivation and inspiration.  Reading articles from some of my favorite travel bloggers like Polkadot Passport and Sher She Goes inspired me to pursue a career in travel writing.  I love the idea of getting to spend my life exploring and learning new things about history and culture almost every day.  Here are my 10 travel bucket list goals:

1. Machu Picchu

This has been on my bucket list for the longest time and I swear I will get in enough shape to complete the Inca Trail.  I feel like extensive hiking and camping to get to the beautiful destination of Machu Picchu makes the journey of getting there much more worth it.  This is the top destination on my travel bucket list!

2. Great Pyramid and Great Sphinx of Giza

The three pyramids and the Sphinx of Giza date back to over 3,000 years ago and because of the engineer’s planning, the detail is still in amazing condition.  I feel that a trip to Egypt is a out of my comfort zone and I would love to learn more about the history and go explore the beautiful views the country has to offer.

3. Cappadocia, Turkey

Who doesn’t want to climb into a hot air balloon that takes you over an incredible and diverse landscape of Turkey? This city is also home to the Evil Eye Tree, which is meant to ward off any evil such as greed or envy and is also an interesting part of the Turkish and Greek cultural history.

4. Taj Mahal, India

One day I hope to see this intricate and stunning piece of Muslim architecture at sunrise.  After reading about the history behind the construction of this 17th century UNESCO World Heritage Site, I am very interested to one day see this architectural beauty with my own eyes.

5. Iceland

From the wide range of waterfalls to the incredible geothermal natural hot springs in popular destinations like the Blue Lagoon, I feel that Iceland is a place I need to camp and really explore.  One of my travel goals is to witness the Northern Lights and experience Iceland away from the tourist cities. Look at the breathtaking pictures of this beautiful country!

6. Edinburgh, Scotland

I went to over 15 countries when I studied abroad in Prague and I don’t know how I let myself miss out on traveling to Edinburgh.  From the pictures I have seen it looks like a peaceful destination with a whole lot of green! It is a destination I will definitely have to see…and hopefully never leave.  Who wouldn’t want to see a castle like this?

7. Road trip through New Zealand

One of my big travel goals is to rent a camper van so I can camp along the South Island of New Zealand.  I love the idea of getting to spend nights under the stars enjoying the incredible landscape of the country.  I am definitely going to have to stop in Queenstown and Aoraki/ Mount Cook (New Zealand’s tallest mountain) to get some picture-perfect views.

8. Visit Morocco and camp in the Sahara Desert

I fell in love with Istanbul and I feel like Marrakech and the Sahara Desert are the perfect places for me to learn more about Muslim history and culture (the prayer calls five times a day are such an interesting thing to witness).  I love the idea of spending days in colorful towns and expanding my horizons in a country I have never seen before.  I also want to ride a camel into the Desert and get to see the beauty of the stars by night.

9. Arashiyama Bamboo Grove, Japan

Along with visiting Japan during Cherry Blossom season, I would love to stand in this forest just to look up at the tall and natural beauty of the Bamboo.  The amount of green in the forest that I see through the pictures looks incredible.

10. Cinque Terre, Italy

I got a taste of Italy in Rome and I’m dying to see more of the beautiful and historic country of Italy.  My goal is to hike the many trails in Cinque Terre that lead to the famous views of the coast.  I also hear there is no cars allowed there, which only makes me want to visit more!

Places I have checked off my bucket list:

St. Peter’s Basilica, Vatican City

There’s nothing that makes your desire to travel stronger than checking off the number one thing on your bucket list… so that’s just what I did.  I stumbled upon a video clip of this Basilica in high school and since then fell in love with the idea of visiting Italy and Vatican City and exploring the inside of this architectural masterpiece.  I thought after I finally booked my plane ticket to Rome that my expectations were set to high, but walking through and experiencing the Basilica for myself showed me how travel is really the best learning experience.

Studying Abroad

Let me just start off by saying I have been planning a backpacking trip around Europe since high school.  As a result, it wasn’t a big shock to everyone when I announced first semester of my freshman year in college that I applied to study abroad in Prague the following year.  Little did I know that semester would change my life the way it did.  Studying abroad allowed me to really immerse myself into the local scene and to experience the beautiful city of Prague in an everyday setting, not just as a tourist stop for a couple of days.  I formed amazing friendships and learned so much about the world that I had never discovered before.  I never wanted to get on that plane back home to California.

Go Camping

Thanks to my very outdoorsy boyfriend, I have been able to camp in some of the most beautiful spots in California. My favorites include Joshua Tree (read more here), Big Sur, and the other local spots we want to keep secret for ourselves (maybe one day we will share).  There really is nothing better than enjoying the stars and the natural landscapes of the world because Mother Nature truly is beautiful.  I hope to be able to share with you all soon some camping and outdoor/hike tips!

There are endless options for a travel bucket list because the world is huge and I’m sure I can go on and on about things I hope to see before I kick the bucket.  I hope my list inspires you to get out there and see everything you can!

Experiences > things

Good luck,

L x
